Review: The congress in Romania offered exciting insights, intense exchanges, and new impulses for innovation.

From the 15th to the 19th of May 2024, the 50th Central European Congress for Patient Blood Management of the Romanian Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (SRATI) took place in Sinaia, Romania. At this year’s meeting, Professor Dr Dr Kai Zacharowski (Director of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care, and Pain Therapy at the University Hospital Frankfurt) emphasised the importance of swiftly translating new scientific findings into clinical practice to ensure patient safety. He also highlighted the significance of Patient Blood Management (PBM) and urged the recognition of its importance.

In his presentation, he reported on the success of the German PBM-Network, the collaboration between clinics and hospitals (Meybohm, BJA, 2023), as well as the support from the University Hospital Frankfurt in the (inter)national implementation of PBM.

On the occasion of SRATI’s 50th-anniversary congress, Professor Dr Dr Zacharowski was honoured with the “VITAE CUSTODES” medal for his significant contributions and exceptional dedication to patient care and the preservation of life.

Furthermore, Professor Dr Dr Kai Zacharowski was honoured with the title of “Visiting Professor” for his outstanding academic performance, his tireless efforts in advancing the fields of anaesthesiology and intensive care in Romania, and his significant contributions to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila” in Bucharest.

Prof. Dr. Meybohm receives Julius-Springer-award

The article “Patient Blood Management: Stand der aktuellen Literatur” (Der Chirurg 1; 2016) written by Prof. Dr. Meybohm and colleagues was nominated “best review article” published in the peer-reviewed medical Journal “Der Chirurg” in 2016.

The associated Julius-Springer-Award was presented in Munich on the evening of March 22 2017 as part of the 134. Annual Meeting of the German Society of Surgery. Prof. Dr. Meybohm is honored to receive this prestigious award.

As part of her science documentary “Gefährliche Bluttransfusionen – Was hilft gegen das Risiko?” directress Ulrike Gehring documented the day to day efforts of the the Patient Blood Management Team Frankfurt to progress the implementation of PBM.

The Hartmannbund, a German association of physicians and medical students, acknowledged her efforts in form of the film & television award 2016.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Zacharowski is awarded with the Humanitarian Award 2015 of the Patient Safety Movement

During this year’s annual meeting of the Patient Safety Movement, Prof. Dr. Dr. Kai Zacharowski was awarded the Humanitarian Award 2015 for his efforts regarding the implementation of Patient Blood Management. Joe Kiani, initiator of the Patient Safety Movement, emphasised how important the work of the awardees is to reduce the number of preventable deaths in hospitals. As part of the meeting Prof. Dr. Dr. Zacharowski explained his research to the audience.

The award ceremony was held in the United States of America.

During the same ceremony, the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama and the vice president Joe Biden were honoured for their commitment regarding the implementation of a nationwide hospital network. Additional honourees were senator Barbara Boxer and patient rights activist Alicia Cole. The Patient Safety Movement aims to reduce the number of preventable deaths to zero by 2020.

“I’m very happy, with our research as well as our contribution to this matter is recognised by the Patient Safety Movement in this form”, Prof. Dr. Dr. Kai Zacharowski said after the award ceremony. His consultant, Prof. Dr. Patrick Meybohm, added “In the US we have been granted a platform to show our results, which might initiate a shift of paradigms regarding the recognition of anaemia and its therapy”. The meeting was attended by 250 international experts on medicine and politics, such as president Bill Clinton. The Patient Blood Management working group from Germany was represented by representatives from the four participating university Hospitals (Frankfurt, Bonn, Kiel, Münster). The working group just finished a study evaluating data of more than 129,000 patients.

Patient Blood Management is awarded the Christoph Lohfert Stiftungspreis 2014

In 2014, the Christoph Lohfert Stiftungspreis, awarded by the Christoph Lohfert foundation, honoured projects aiming to “assure quality regarding risk and error management in hospitals from the patients view”. The honouree of 2014 was picked from more than 50 applications by a jury constituted by prestigious representatives of the health care system. In presence of the patron, health senator Cornelia Prüfer-Storcks, this year’s price awarded to the Patient Blood Management project by Dr. Christoph Lohfert, the benefactor of the Christoph Lohfert foundation. The award ceremony was held in Hamburg as part of the 10^th Health management congress.

With the Christoph Lohfert Stiftungspreis, the Christoph Lohfert foundation honours and supports well-tried and sustainable projects focusing on the hospitalised patient, his needs and interests. The Christoph Lohfert Stiftungspreis in particular supports projects, improving the patient’s path during hospitalisation, the communication in hospitals as well as patient safety.
